MTN Group – Centralized radio and backhaul planning for 18 operations across 2G, 3G, 4G and soon 5G
Customer
MTN is one of the largest operator groups in the world, boasting over 230 million mobile subscribers.
Challenge
MTN was looking to improve its network operations and find additional efficiencies wherever possible. They had been using ASSET Radio for 2G, 3G and 4G for over 15 years in a de-centralized model and were looking at how they could further optimize this investment to seamlessly add 5G in the future.
TEOCO’s Solution
TEOCO deployed a centralized ASSET application server cluster in an MTN data center providing access to ASSET Radio and ASSET Backhaul for 18 MTN operations. The cluster was divided into 3 sub-clusters, one for each of the major regions, with Group users having access to all clusters. TEOCO is responsible for system maintenance, ensuring the system is always running at its best, as well as population coverage reporting across all the OpCo’s. MTN also uses both MYRIAD and Volcano to ensure highly accurate predictions.
Value Generated
TEOCO has enabled a more centralized approach to planning, which has delivered several benefits for MTN. These include:
- Improved governance, license efficiency and system administration of the ASSET installation.
- Consistent and reliable reporting at a group level, particularly when it comes to regulatory aspects, such as population coverage statistics.
- Planning at the Group level for the smallest of OpCo’s, which may not have the required in-country expertise.
- Oversight from the CTO group at head office – to drive consistency and best practices across all the Group’s operations.
